Between the World and Me Pg 126-152
One of the parts of this section of the book that I found to be very meaningful was when Coates was talking about the differences between his childhood and that of his son. When looking at how his son differed from him he saw hope for this future because his generation was/is not ok with just surviving anymore. His son and those around him were the first step toward change in his eyes and I cant imagine just how proud Coates must have been. To listen to how he talks about his son and to hear how he wishes to guide this determination in his son with the wisdom that he has so that it can be focused in the proper ways.
Another part of this section that I found to be very meaningful was the ending where Coates talked about how he hopes that the dreamers will one day see the error of their ways. Once they realize that the African American community was being treated poorly they could make a massive difference in the way the world works. I found this to be very impactful because throughout the book the dreamers were scolded but now Coates talks about them as if they could be one of the biggest helps towards the cause if they were to change their ways. This hope and this mission are very powerful as purpose and hope are some of the most motivating and inspiring things that exist on this earth.
Another portion of the this reading that I found meaningful was when Coates was talking about his conversation with Dr. Jones and she said that she wished Prince wasn't dead not that he had chosen a different college. I thought that this was meaningful because it points out how they should not consider his death their faults or that anything they could have done would change anything. Coates says that in order to convince themselves of this they had to build their armor and not let anything get to them because it was too painful to live otherwise. This is something that really hit me hard and something that I had not thought about. Seeing it now that pain and that way of living are deeply saddening as no one should have to go through anything like that or go through their lives like that.
I also found it very hopeful when Coates talked about how he saw hope in his son's future. Yet it made me sad because he only said this due to the fact that his son was going to grow up outside of America. Your last paragraph is something that I had never thought of. It really wasn't reliant on anything that Prince Jones had done. I agree that no one should have to go though.
ReplyDeleteYou made a good point regarding Coates viewpoint of the Dreamers and how it has shifted within these last pages of the book. Throughout the book, Coates outlines the differences between the Dreamers life vs the black Americans and focuses on the negatives the Dreamers have created. At the end portion of the book, he addresses them with hope and in seeing change for the future.
ReplyDeleteGood empathy here. I can sense that you're really trying to see the world as he does and you are growing as a result. Good work
